Since 1993, photography and landscape have formed the foundation of my practice. Since 1998 my ongoing work Untitled Landscapes explores the quiet, mystical vastness of remote environments.

These photographs are informed by historical and Romantic landscape paintings such as Nicolas Poussin and Claude Lorrain from the 17th century, and later painters such as Caspar David Friedrich of the 19th century Romantic period and their pursuit of an idealised landscape.

The images are created through a slow process, using an analogue camera. I observe the atmosphere where light meets mystery, waiting patiently for the right moment to appear. It feels as if I become one with the landscape itself. Sometimes, I wait for days, even weeks, for a moment illuminated by a light I once believed existed only in paintings.

During 2024 the 250th anniversary of Caspar David Friedrich is celebrated. He and the romanticism movement has left an indelible mark on the arts and culture, and its influence can still be seen in various forms today. The immense meaning of romanticism is still present even in in our time today. Through my landscape photographs I try to find the connection towards the desire of romanticism and regain consciousness of our origins.

Emerging from this dialogue between past and present, the images suspend time. The landscape photographs, which mysteriously hold the world still for a moment, bear witness to a timeless journey — a longing for longing.
