The Well is set around a farm in southeastern Finland where May-Lis Andersen has spent almost every summer. The idea for the project started with a series of images taken in 1992 in connection with the cleaning of the farm’s well. The farm has been uninhabited for several years and is falling into disrepair.

When Ida Taavitsainen was expecting her second child, she decided to start documenting her family’s life with an Instax camera. The pictures take physical form immediately and multiply as the children grow.

Think of the word countryside. What comes to mind? Conservative. Traditional. Perhaps even nationalist.
