In his ongoing investigative project titled “Black Carnation,” Konstantin Zhukov has explored Latvia’s queer history, primarily focusing on the Soviet period and the period immediately following Latvia’s liberation. At Centrum för fotografi, he further develops this interest with new works.

In his various exhibitions, he highlights stories and experiences, often based on oral narratives or unpublished material, and constructs a new history. Through photography, sculpture, film, sound, and installations, he creates an atmosphere that brings the visitor closer to an experience and a time.

In his previous works, he has, among other things, explored the Latvian coastal towns and their function as meeting places for gay men, the semi-illegal parties of the 90s where LGBTQI+ individuals could meet, and the Latvian National Opera as a venue for queer life.

Konstantin Zhukov’s exhibition tells of a still relatively unexplored time and place that is important to incorporate into general historical narratives.

A short welcome speech with the artist will take place at 18:00
