Fotografi: Carla Lomakka

I see you with the eyes of sepias

the eyes of cuttlefish

mild, introspective

eyes forever closed

with a soft palate for the throat

eyes forever open:

I see you, I see you

I see you, my beautiful one –

Excerpt from the poem Sea Transformation by Gunnar Ekelöf (Non Serviam, 1945).

The basis of the work Come Let Us Rock in Swell is images taken of spirit specimens: botanical and zoological organs preserved in glass jars filled with spirits. The specimens are paired with images of environments and people taken from the artist’s own photo archive. Together they form a harmony, diptychs. A smaller selection of these is shown in the window at Centrum för fotografi.

Special thanks to Uppsala’s Museum of Natural History and the Swedish Museum of Natural History.

Carla Lomakka (b. 1996) works with projects where she often combines photography and text. She is currently working on two photo and poetry books, Se god ut (in collaboration with the poet Erik Lindman Mata, Pamflett Förlag) and Fågel Lös (in collaboration with the poet Houssin Vennberg Sninate, self-published).
