Sensitive images – a conversation about photographs from the Holocaust

The Holocaust is one of the world’s most thoroughly documented crimes, in both words and images. Many photographs were taken by the perpetrators themselves, or by the Allies after the end of the war. How can we understand the Holocaust through these images, and how can we use them today now that we know more about the circumstances? Many images show human remains or severe suffering.

How does one handle such photographs in a collection, and how does one speak about the subject with respect for those who were murdered?

Curator Yael Fried talks about how Sweden’s Museum of the Holocaust works with difficult images and ethical considerations in relation to photographs from the Holocaust.
