The project is based on the desire to communicate when you are new to a place and want to connect with those who speak another language. Through a form of performance, the artist wanted to be understood. With the flags, different messages are formed, letter by letter, which break against the language’s usually fluid form and show the impossibility of communicating in a way that one is not used to. The flag embroidered on the shirt contains the sentence “I want to communicate with you.”

Mercè Torres Ràfols was born in Catalonia in 1995. She lives and works in Gothenburg, where she received her master’s degree in photography from HDK-Valand in 2021. Torres Ràfols primarily works with photography at the intersection with other materials such as text, ceramics, and found objects. She is interested in issues relating to heritage, place, and tradition, how knowledge is passed on, and how we can understand something anew. Torres Ràfols asks these questions in a specific environment, and examines how a place has been charged over time by society.
