Kim Jansson: The Lightning Field
Kim Jansson
20230825 - 20230915
In Kim Jansson’s project The Lightning Field, we get to take part in a journey and a reflection on how to tell a story about something that cannot be depicted.
The project depicts a journey to the land art piece The Lightning Field in the New Mexico desert. Prior to the visit, the manager of the work sent an email with clear instructions, stating that the work and its immediate surroundings were not to be photographed. The work is a reflection on how to tell a story about something that cannot be depicted. The trip to Quemado, New Mexico was made in the fall of 2017. The images exhibited are found in the self-published zine The Lightning Field, which was released earlier this year.
“At dawn I wake to walk in the field.
I stay out there awhile to cement all the details in my memory.
But I don’t remember any more of this morning than that of any other day that has passed.”
Text from the zine The Lightning Field (2023)
Kim Jansson (b.1977, Mjölby) holds a bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from HDK-Valand at the University of Gothenburg. She primarily works with photography, video, and film, moving freely between documentary storytelling and artistic exploration. She looks at what happens in the periphery, and the themes often concern the relationship between the familiar and the search for unknown territory.
