Caitlin E. Littlewood: Monster Highway
20240315 - 20240405
Monster Highway is an ongoing series in which Littlewood photographs herself in front of large monuments often found along highways, which are common in places like Australia.
Here we encounter monuments such as the big pineapple, the big lobster, the big koala, and others. They have often been created through private initiatives and collections to celebrate local business. By depicting herself in front of these monuments, the artist gives the viewer an idea of the landmarks’ true scale, while recreating everyday tourist images. Instead of being photographed by a loved one, Littlewood travels to these places alone, thus becoming both subject and photographer.
The series consists of several of Australia’s iconic big things, as well as other monuments in Sweden and Norway. The project began in 2022, during the artist’s first trip home to Australia after the pandemic. In the project, she explores themes such as Australian iconography and kitschy Australiana. The large monuments are reminiscent of childhood car vacations with the family and are something that Littlewood considers an essential part of the Australian identity.
Caitlin E. Littlewood (b. 1989) is a visual artist based in Gothenburg. She primarily works with photography as a tool to examine stories from our collective past. Littlewood uses archival images and mixes them with her own photographs to create intersections between historical events and the present. She uses analog processes, digital media, and installation in exhibition and publication formats to put the stories in new contexts.
The opening talk will be broadcast live on Centrum för fotografi’s Instagram at 1 PM on Friday, March 15 and will be held in English.
