Nanna Hammer Tiittanen: Violets are Blue
Nanna Hammer Tiittanen
20230510 - 20230602
By depicting photographs and poems in a new context, Nanna Hammer Tiittanen explores how the women in her family have been portrayed over a century.
The work Violets are Blue is based on photo albums and poetry books from Nanna Hammer Tiittanen’s own family archive. Poetry books were a tradition for young girls up until the 1990s and were used to collect greetings in the form of poems from friends and relatives.
By depicting photographs and poems in a new context, the artist explores how the women in her family have been portrayed over a century, as well as the roles, values, and expectations we have inherited from our mothers.
The work consists of cyanotypes on cotton paper and found picture frames.
Nanna Hammer Tiittanen was born in 1996 in Aarhus and holds a bachelor’s degree in Photography from HDK-Valand at the University of Gothenburg.
