Water Tower is a photographic work that captures the architecture of a water tower by displaying details and materiality using light and shadow. Instead of showing an overall photograph of the building, Andrea Singer isolates specific parts and, through this, builds up an image of the space. The approach creates a presence by emphasizing the subtle in the texture, shape, and contrast, as well as how the light shapes the structure.

Water towers stand silently and monumentally in the cityscape and landscape, and are often perceived as merely functional. In addition to their primary role of storing and distributing water, these structures have a deep symbolic meaning. By rising above their surroundings, they bear witness to the passage of time and visualize the transition between industrial growth and the permanence of nature.

In Water Tower, the water tower has been freed from its function and instead transformed into an object for contemplation. The artist elevates the tower from being a part of the infrastructure and sees it as a symbol of resilience in the ongoing tension between nature and artificial structures. By focusing on fragmented details, Water Tower invites the viewer to look beyond the functional purpose.
