Welcome to a lecture on occult photography. A deep dive into Strindberg’s own photography and other photographers’ attempts to depict the supernatural provides insight into the turn-of-the-century interest in occult photography. The lecture is presented by the Center for Photography and Stockholm County Museum.

Per Faxneld talks about the turn-of-the-century attempts to photograph the supernatural – everything from ghosts to fairies. How was this connected to older esoteric ideas as well as the new technological advances that shook people’s worldviews? We meet spiritualists, skeptics, and Arthur Conan Doyle himself in this excursion into photography’s darkest domains. Per Faxneld is a senior lecturer in the history of religions and a specialist in esotericism. He is the author of several books, including “The Occult Turn of the Century” (Volante, 2020).

Erik Höök talks about August Strindberg’s psychological portraits. Strindberg was constantly looking for new artistic forms of expression. Therefore, it was natural for Strindberg to also try the young art of photography. His photographic register includes naturalistic observation and autobiographical documentation, scientific studies, and reflections on the laws of optics.
At times he was purely experimental. As a photographer, he believed that the camera could also capture the invisible and the occult. Erik Höök is the director of the Strindberg Museum.
