From idea to finished book: Hans Jonsson – Sami – not an isolated island
What is the process of making a book? During the autumn, Landskrona Library is arranging a series of lectures where three photobook authors present their books under the title “From idea to finished book.”
Hans Jonsson has worked as a photographer since the early 1980s. He began his career at Sydsvenskan in Malmö, where he worked until 1994, after which he became a freelancer, mainly with magazine and advertising assignments. Hans has previously published the books “Last Dance with Monica” (2005), “Chief with the Right to Cut Ribbons” (2012), “Barbie Loves Sweden” (2016), and “Sami – not an isolated island” (2021).
In “Sami – not an isolated island”, Hans Jonsson portrays Sami people in their important environments and contexts. Here we meet some of the people who work in the mountains and in reindeer husbandry, the everyday life that has been a natural and obvious part of the Sami people’s lives since time immemorial. The book also contains the Sami’s own stories and an essay that puts the images in a historical perspective. The texts are translated into North Sami and English. Hans has used wet plate photography, a photographic process from the mid-1800s. You photograph on glass or aluminum plates instead of film, and because the process is wet, you must always have your “darkroom” with you.
October 10, 18:00: Jonas Dahlström – “07:27:47”.
November 16, 18:00: Anette Nilsson – “Close to my father”.
