Therese Obenza
Biography
Thurees Obenza is a Filipino image maker born in Manila and based in Gothenburg, Sweden. Working across photography, sculpture, and installation, she uses food to explore memory and cultural identity. Drawn to its textures and inevitable decay, she approaches food as a vessel through which personal and collective histories can be preserved.
Her practice is an act of preservation. Through collecting and transforming ordinary objects, she explores how memories become attached to physical forms. In her work, a sculpted dragonfruit or a slowly decomposing tomato is more than just food. It is a story.
Thurees constructs images rather than documents them. Color, materiality, and composition guide her process, shaping images and objects that reflect her relationship to the world around her. It is this that drives her interests: how making something with care can become its own form of keeping; of culture, of connection, and of self.
