Cinema Queer

In connection with Konstantin Zhukov’s exhibition The Day Before You Came, we move beyond the gallery space with an installation of the artist’s video work, Black Carnation No2, together with a selection of Baltic queer film.

Obscene West. Naglis is named after a monthly magazine for the gay community in Lithuania in the 1990s and is dedicated to queer culture and its significance in Lithuania and the neighbouring Baltic countries—Estonia and Latvia.

The programme focuses on works that analyse and problematise the prejudices queer people encountered in the 1990s and 2000s, but also positive self-representation and the political upheaval that defined many post-Soviet countries. Together, the works portray a social landscape in the three newly independent countries and their polarised view of gender and sexuality, raising questions about how history and relationships are shaped by global developments—and how we can use this today.
