Futuro Berg Fredes: Sidewalk Stories
Futuro Berg Fredes
20250314 - 20250418
In a society dominated by cars, choosing to take public transport or walk becomes a conscious act. In Sidewalk Stories, Futuro Berg presents street portraits and images of urban scenes that resulted from the photographer taking the bus or walking in Washington DC, Los Angeles, and San Diego in the USA.
During his travels and walks, Futuro Berg saw a side of the cities that is often hidden from the public: the places shaped by limited mobility. His travels led him to those who are often marginalized for not having a car – minorities, the unemployed, and people living outside the fast-paced bubble of car culture. These spontaneous encounters became the core of the project.
The photographs in Sidewalk Stories are taken with film. The slow, analogue working method reflects the pace of his exploration. This, in turn, invites a deeper reflection on the fleeting encounters and moments captured.
Sidewalk Stories invites the viewer to connect with those who move through cities on foot or by public transport. It becomes a story of belonging, resilience, and the humanity that can arise when we slow down and see the world from a street perspective.
Futuro Berg Fredes is a Chilean photographer and documentary storyteller who explores issues related to migration, human relations, and social justice. In 2008, he emigrated from Chile to Europe, where he lived in several different countries before coming to Sweden.
Berg Fredes is also a political scientist with a background in international relations, where he has worked in refugee camps and coordinated several humanitarian projects. Photography has been a way to document migration and street life in Europe, as well as in North and South America. His work has been published in international as well as Swedish newspapers such as Vice, Sydsvenskan, and Huffington Post. With his images, Futuro Berg Fredes creates an open dialogue about displacement, identity, and resilience.
Artist talk will be broadcast on Centrum för fotografi’s Instagram, at 1 PM on Friday, March 14.
