The winner of the Swedish Photobook Award 2025 is Ela Polkowska with her book Splinter.

-Splinter is my first photobook, and it feels fantastic that it is being recognised. I have consciously worked to create a tactile feeling and for the viewer to experience the material diversity of the place I photographed, to feel the fabric or the wood, says Ela.

The nominees for the Swedish Photobook Award 2025, in addition to the winner, were Eija Hetekivi, Julian Slagman, Kent Klich, and Maja Daniels. A total of 119 photobooks were submitted this year, which is a record.

For the second year in a row, the Artist Book Award is also being presented. This is an award for photographers who work with smaller editions, experimental productions, and photographic Artist books. The award was established in 2024 to recognise and reward the rich flora of photographic literature that is often published in limited editions. This year, the award went to Ines Sebalj and her photobook Jag begär krig, which is about the Balkan War and how it affected her upbringing.

Over the 29 times that the Swedish Photobook Award has been presented, many photobooks, photographers, designers, and publishers have been recognised. The exhibition features films about all the nominated photo authors and their books. It is an in-depth meeting with the author and an opportunity to spread and strengthen the position of photographic literature further.

The Swedish Photobook Award was established in 1996 by the Photo Authors within the Swedish Photographers’ Association to stimulate Swedish photobook publishing. The Photo Authors were formed in 1972 to give photobook-producing photographers greater opportunities to act strategically and collectively to strengthen the position of photographic literature. The activity benefits photographers both within and outside the association who are engaged in book publishing and create content for literature.

The exhibition is a collaboration with the Photo Authors within the Swedish Photographers’ Association. This year’s jury consisted of Louise Wolthers, Göran Greider, Casia Bromberg, Alexandra Ellis, and Nicolás Wormull.
