Stefano Conti: Teach Me How You Designed These Creatures

The work Teach Me How You Designed These Creatures examines the various theories and contradictions surrounding the historiography of the Nuragic civilization. This people existed in Sardinia, Italy, between 2,300 BC and 200 AD and played a central role in shaping the island’s identity.
The lack of scientific information about the civilization has given rise to strong myth-making, which has paved the way for a number of bizarre and absurd theories. In the work, oral accounts play a central role, often contradicting the narratives usually presented by museums and historians. It is in this mystique and heterogeneity that Conti’s work takes shape. Nuragic statuettes, megalithic architectures, and unidentified objects are some of the protagonists in this story.
Since 2021, Stefano Conti has made several study trips to Sardinia, where he has visited archaeological sites and museums that are important to the island’s history. With the help of locals, he has found new places to visit in order to find more absurd situations. The project is still ongoing.
Stefano Conti (b. 1994, Treviglio, Italy) is an artist based between Italy and Sweden. By combining photography, text and installation, he explores topics related to historiography and the human relationship to objects. He works with the uncertainty that comes with traces of the past, as well as with places that hold multiple historical narratives.
