In their respective film works, they examine forest death in the age of the climate crisis. In his work, Sheung Yiu highlights the forest’s own mechanisms and inhabitants with perspectives beyond the human-centered. Hagren/Bela uses an associative and photographic language and combines processes in the forest with the darkroom and raises the forest’s existential questions. During the evening, they will both show their respective film works that address these issues and then talk together with the curator and researcher Camilla Larsson.

The conversation will be in English.

Hagren/Bela consists of Weronika Bela (born 1988, Baerum) and Ivar Hagren (born 1986, Stockholm) and is an artist duo based in Stockholm. In their project-based practice, they work from the starting point of the historical conditions of analog photography and its materiality. They work with low-key image worlds and evoke associative stories in still images and video essays. They both have a master’s degree in fine arts from Konstfack. Hagren/Bela were Iaspis studio grant holders in 2022 and received the Hasselblad Foundation’s nature photography grant in 2024. www.hagrenbela.com

Sheung Yiu 姚尚勤 (born 1991, Hong Kong) is an image-centered artist and researcher, based in Helsinki. In his research-based practice, Yiu collaborates with interdisciplinary experts to explore imaging methods that arise at the intersection of photography and large-scale computation. Through his collaboration with remote sensing researchers, he learned to see the earth from satellites. He is currently investigating the history of face reading and facial recognition to understand how photographs become predictions. His work takes the form of photography, video essays, performance, exhibition installations and artist books. He is a doctoral student in photography at Aalto University. He was selected for FOAM Talent 2024 and a member of FUTURES. His works have been exhibited internationally at the Hasselblad Foundation in Sweden, Taikwun Contemporary in Hong Kong and Circulation(s) Festival in France. www.sheungyiu.com
