Lecture: 100,000 Image Memories – Analog and Digital Care
Sara Ellenius and Karin Neander from the Nordic Museum talk about analog and digital photography care, based on the accident that struck the museum and marked the beginning of a journey towards mass digitization and increased accessibility.
Approximately 100,000 negatives were affected by a water leak in one of the Nordic Museum’s negative archives in January 2021. After the acute rescue operation, a pilot project was developed to thaw, separate, treat, digitize, and make accessible the negatives affected by the water leak.
Through a unique collaboration with Wikimedia Sweden, the public is engaged to supplement the metadata for a selection of the images. The project’s production phase began in September 2022 and will end in September 2023, when all 100,000 images will be made available on DigitaltMuseum.
